It's time we had a collective conversation about the promotion of trades and services careers to young people in New Zealand today.

With only 7% of school leavers heading into an apprenticeship or on-the-job learning situation, while 28% head for a tertiary study pathway, its clear our young people cannot see the real opportunities trades and services careers offer.

And supply isn't meeting demand - according to 2015 Immigration NZ data trades and services roles make up one third of occupations on the Long-Term Skills Shortage List. By 2020 our industries will need tens of thousands of people to meet replacement demand and growth.
